The fact that Netflix is awarded prizes for series or feature films is no longer news.

Two productions from the streaming service are also in the running for the nominations for the 59th Grimme Prize in 2023 in the category »Fiction« – on the one hand »Kleo«, on the other hand the »Dark« successor »1899«.

The latter nomination triggers mixed feelings: Netflix recently announced that it did not want to continue the series beyond the first season.

In addition to »fiction«, there are nomination committees in three other categories.

After Netflix was able to record nominations in "Children & Youth" two years ago and a Rohwedder documentary was nominated in "Information & Culture" in 2021, this time Volker Heise's documentary series "Gladbeck - the hostage drama" has prize opportunities in the information area.

In addition, there is now a nomination in the category "Entertainment": The beautification show "Queer Eye Germany" is in the running, among other things against the "ZDF Magazin Royale" and a special edition of Tim Mälzer's "Kitchen Crew" (Vox).

A total of 69 productions and individual performances were nominated from more than 780 submissions.

The majority is, as usual, from the public sector.

In addition to the Netflix productions and the Vox cooking show, exceptions also come from RTL, which has been nominated for two series, and from Magenta TV, which can look forward to a nomination for the series »Oh Hell«.

Thanks to Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, ProSieben could get a special prize for their 15 minutes of attention to the revolution in Iran.

»The difficult global political situation worsened again last year with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the energy crisis and the protests in Iran.

This year's nominations show how many outstanding programs there were on these topics in the past year, but they also do not ignore the urgency and relevance of other pressing social issues,« Grimme director Frauke Gerlach tries to find a bracket for the nominations .

Among other things, two ZDF reporters have been nominated for special awards: Golineh Atai for her reporting from the Arab world and Katrin Eigendorf “for her unique work as a war reporter in Ukraine”.

In addition, the "continuous investigative research on peripheral issues of right-wing radicalism" in the RBB magazine "Contrasts" could be recognized as a "special journalistic achievement".

According to the Grimme report, all categories show how relevant the topic of diversity is for our society.

Of the ten nominations in the »Entertainment« category, four productions are the focus.

The youth film »Futur Drei« (RBB) offers a particularly powerful and sensitive approach to the issues of queerness and finding identity among adolescents.

»The show with the elephant – Why are there different skin colors?« (WDR/Kika) is also dedicated to the topic of diversity.

From January 28th, the juries will meet in Marl to decide on the awarding of 16 possible Grimme prizes.

Whoever gets the awards will be announced on March 21st.

On April 21, the prizes will be awarded in the theater of the city of Marl.
