Tik Tok extends program that highlights accounts of government-controlled media and outlets.
The novelty comes after a test phase which, in recent months, has involved the media considered by TikTok to be linked to Russia and active in conveying the narrative of the conflict in Ukraine among users.
Until today, Tik Tok reported, with a specific label, media in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, while with the current project it will expand to over 40 countries, unspecified.
“Our state-affiliated media policy is to label accounts operated by entities whose editorial or decision-making is under the control or influence of a government,” said Justin Erlich, Global Head of Issue Policy & Partnerships, Trust & Safety.

The goal is to ensure that people have an accurate and transparent context when interacting with media accounts that might be presenting a government's point of view.

In evaluating the editorial independence of a media Tik Tok takes into consideration an organization's mission statement, its editorial practices, the composition of the decision-making pyramid and the actual stances taken on local and global facts.
"We also apply additional control to entities that may be heavily dependent on state funding, directly or through advertising, loans and grants," concludes the social network.
Each flagged account will display a "state-controlled media" label, with an opportunity to click on the alert to inform yourself and understand any trends in shared posts.
