White curtains turn yellowish over time or get a slight gray haze.
Two home remedies will make them look like new again.
If yellowed laundry such as shirts, t-shirts or bed linen simply no longer turns white, many people turn to chemical cleaners from the drugstore.
In fact, yellowing or a gray haze can also be treated with well-established home remedies - this also applies to curtains.

1. Home remedy: Clean yellowed curtains with baking soda
Baking powder not only ensures fluffy, airy pastries, but has also often proven itself as a help when washing and cleaning.
Baking soda restores yellowed curtains to their radiant white.
In order for this to succeed, you must first remove and soak the window curtains, blinds, etc.:
To do this, pour five packets of baking soda into a half-filled bathtub.
If you use a different vessel for soaking, reduce the amount of baking soda accordingly.
Alternatively, baking powder can also be replaced with baking soda (1:1).
After a few hours of soaking, the curtains can be washed in the washing machine at 30°C or 40°C (note the care instructions).
It is best to use curtain detergent, but reduce the amount by half and add two more packets of baking soda.
The curtains should now be bright white again.

2. Home remedy against gray haze on curtains: Cola
Cola is said to work wonders to rid curtains of gray haze.
The phosphoric acid it contains dissolves dirt.
Simply add 150 ml of cola to the detergent and then start the wash cycle.
Toilets are also made flawless with cola.

Prevent yellowing - what you can do
To prevent curtains from yellowing or forming a gray haze in the first place, regular washing helps – two to four times a year.
Smokers should not smoke in the apartment at all, but switch to the balcony or terrace.
Nicotine residues are very difficult to remove.
Even white window frames can turn yellow from nicotine - in this case, tougher measures are necessary.
