"There is a sort of magic circle that gravitates around Santa Marta made up of people who, in my opinion, are not prepared from the theological point of view", says the former Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith adding that "in the Vatican it seems that by now information circulates in a parallel way, on the one hand institutional channels are active unfortunately less and less consulted by the pontiff, and on the other the personal ones used even for the appointment of bishops or cardinals".
You cannot punish someone without having evidence of their guilt in hand.
This way of acting has happened frequently in the Vatican and it does not concern only the singular
Becciu case, but it has even happened within the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith when some priests were expelled without reasons,

"For Cardinal Becciu the question is macroscopic also because it is amplified by the mass media: he was humiliated and punished in front of the world without being given any chance to defend himself.

Yet the presumption of innocence should apply to anyone, a sacrosanct right since ancient Roman times". Mueller states that "Francis decided to punish him severely after someone had gone to him in Santa Marta to show him an article from L'Espresso , an Italian weekly which reported an investigation into the cardinal.
But how do you act on a press article?"
On the issue of abuse, not everyone in the Church is treated equally.

Gustavo Zanchetta.
"Zanchetta causes discussion as he was able to enjoy a privileged status as a friend of the Pope. As a rule, friendships cannot influence the progress of justice, everyone must be treated equally".
Muller - in the book "In good faith" with Franca Giansoldati - also speaks of the case of "Don Mauro Inzoli, a priest close to Communion and Liberation. The Vatican court started a trial against him at the end of which it was decided to reduce him to the state layman because he was found guilty of crimes. Unfortunately, however, there was a cardinal of the curia who went to knock on Santa Marta, asking for clemency. Faced with this interventionism, the Pope was convinced and chose to modify the sentence by adjusting the sentence for Inzoli, establishing that he priest but with the ban on wearing the
priestly dress or clergyman and without presenting himself to the community as consecrated.
He remained consecrated but could not show himself to outsiders as such.
