Italy plunges into winter. From North to South there are heavy snowfalls which are creating many inconveniences.

In Molise, the night just ended was a nightmare for hundreds of motorists

who were stranded due to bad weather on the road between Isernia and Campobasso near Castelpetroso.

Traffic, while it was snowing abundantly in the area, was paralyzed for hours, from 7pm until late at night, due to heavy vehicles in difficulty and in particular a lorry that ended up sideways on the roadway.

Many cars were trapped for up to six hours and also several buses full of students and commuters.

Many people have not been able to return home and have had to sleep in hotels in the area.

It has been snowing non-stop in the region since yesterday afternoon with heavy inconvenience and damage.

Today the schools have remained closed in the two capitals, Campobasso and Isernia

, and also in dozens of other smaller towns.

In Campobasso, over 30 centimeters of snow fell, 90 snowploughs and salt spreaders worked tirelessly during the night.

So many difficulties on the roads, there are many ways that are impassable due to the snow or the fall of branches and trees.

Several mayors denounce "difficult situations" also due to damaged telephone or energy cables.

The same problem in Campobasso for the Christmas lights, which had not yet been dismantled, and which, weighed down by the snow, ended up on the streets of the centre.

In the mountain resorts of the region the snow exceeded one meter in height.

Temperatures down to 5 degrees below zero.

The snowfall is affecting the entire Umbria-Marche Apennines

and most of the localities close to the mountain range up to hilly altitudes.

A blizzard hit Castelluccio di Norcia, where the road leading to the Sibillini village was interrupted.

Snow also in Norcia, Cascia and Monteleone di Spoleto.

Snowstorm in Frontignano di Ussita (Macerata) where the ski slopes remain closed.

The perturbation, according to the weather forecasts of the Functional Center of the Regional Civil Protection, should persist in Umbria throughout the day and during the next night.

It snows in the province of Ascoli Piceno even at hilly altitudes

, but particularly in the earthquake-hit areas of Arquata del Tronto where 35-40 centimeters of snow has fallen in the highest-altitude hamlets.

It has also been snowing for hours on the main hills of Calabria, where temperatures in some mountain resorts have dropped below zero

.

From Pollino to Sila, large and small, from Serre to Aspromonte, heavy snowfalls are recorded during the night which have not spared even the municipalities of the foothills up to 700-800 meters in height.

And two groups of hikers got stuck in the snow in two different mountain locations in Calabria, in the Monte Botte Donato area, the highest peak of the Calabrian plateau in the province of Cosenza, and in the Piani di Novacco area at an altitude of 1,315 meters in the Pollino area.

In both cases, the firefighters intervened to save them.

Rain mixed with snow also on the northern area of Catanzaro while many of the Presila municipalities are whitewashed.

Strong winds and very rough seas on the Tyrrhenian coasts, especially in the Cosenza area, where some mayors have decided to close the seafront.

Part of the Ionian basin, in the Crotone area, is also agitated.

In the rest of the region, especially in the central-northern part, it has been raining since the night but there have been some clear spells.

A sea storm that required the intervention of the fire brigade in the port of Maratea (Potenza) and a stretch of road was closed between Bernalda and Pisticci (Matera) - in addition to the closure of schools today in Potenza and other municipalities of the province.

These are the main consequences of the bad weather that is affecting Basilicata.

In Sardinia, the Nuorese woke up for the second day under the snow

, which today also made its appearance in the capital of Barbagia: the mayor of Nuoro Andrea Soddu ordered the closure of the schools which since yesterday have not taught even in the mountain villages of the territory.

This morning in central Sardinia it continues to snow.

The Traffic Police with its 23 patrols are in action in all the roads where the criticality is maximum, such as the Statale 131 between Macomer and Campeda and on the SS 389 Nuoro-Lanusei.
