In Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, police officers and young people saved a man from drowning in a river in freezing temperatures.
As the police announced on Sunday, the 27-year-old, who was already severely hypothermic, was discovered on Saturday evening near a railway bridge in the Hunte.
Young people held out a stick to him, which he held on to.
At the same time, the police and rescue workers were alerted by an emergency call.
When a patrol car crew arrived, the man clung to the youngster's cane, the statement said.
The officials realized that the 27-year-old was already completely exhausted and threatened to go under - and acted without further ado.
The police jumped into the river and kept the 27-year-old afloat until the fire department arrived.
The young man was taken to a hospital.
It is unclear why he fell into the river.
