(ANSA) - LIMA, JAN 22 - More than 200 students were arrested yesterday by the Peruvian police inside the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Unmsm) during an operation on the university campus where the young people, who had come to protest against the government, had been staying since 18 January.
Attorney General Alfonso Barrenechea, national coordinator of the prosecution for crime prevention, explained to RPP radio that the arrested students were transferred to the offices of the Anti-Terrorism Directorate (Dircote) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (Dirincri), both located in the Cercado de Lima .
The magistrate specified that 20 prosecutors were ordered to go to the headquarters of the interrogation departments, together with eight coroners who will carry out the legal medical examinations, in order to determine that those arrested "do not present any kind of physical problem".
Barrenechea also declared that the demonstrators, who had come to Lima from Puno and Cusco to take part in the anti-government marches, would have acted "in flagrante delicto" by entering and staying at the university without authorization from the competent authorities.
In addition, concluded the Attorney General, the investigation following the deployment of police officers will also focus on a complaint by the Unmsm of the theft of equipment that took place in the university and on the assault on security personnel by a group of alleged demonstrators.
