There is an animal in the Israeli nature so powerful that its jaw is even capable of cracking bones.

According to Ezra Hadad inspector of the Nature and Parks Authority, the striped hyenas feed on a wide range of foods and very diverse ways to obtain them.

"Their main food is carcasses - those found dead in the field, run over on the road or leftovers left by animals such as wolves and jackals. In addition, they also hunt small animals - rodents, reptiles, injured or weak birds, etc.," he says.

According to him, hyenas living near settlements usually go in and collect food from the garbage cans.

"Less known is the fact that they don't feed only on meat - hyenas also enjoy fruits and vegetables, both from nature and from agricultural fields."

A massive cheek tooth

The striped hyena has a massive cheek tooth, in addition to a muscle system that allows it to gnaw and break bones, the shell of a land turtle, and more.

The development of teeth capable of crushing, and the ability to extract nourishment even from bones that have been dried for a long time in the sun, is one of the first adaptations in the striped hyena.

Another amazing ability is the fact that it is able to drink water of different qualities, from fresh water to salt water.

Hyenas also tend to bury food - they will take the remains of large carcasses to their den, bury bones and pieces of skin in tangled grass, and return later to finish the meal.
