Antonio Tajani is in Cairo and will be received by the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as part of the tour of three capitals of North Africa and the Middle East by the Italian foreign minister aimed at favoring the stabilization of Libya.

The trip is part of the government initiative led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will be in Algiers.

Tajani arrives in Egypt after having been in Turkey last week and in Tunis on Wednesday: all visits aimed at favoring an agreement between the Libyan parties through an Italian mediation role played "as protagonists", as the minister himself underlined, who recalled that Egypt is an "important country for the stability of the entire area".

The official spokesman of the Presidency of the Egyptian Republic,

Ambassador Bassam Rady,

confirming the meeting between the Egyptian head of state and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani for this morning, he stated that "Egypt and Italy are key countries in the Mediterranean region" and its surroundings and that "Egypt is proud of its extensive and distinct historical relations with Italy at the governmental and popular level".

In a message to ANSA, Radi underlined "that Egypt is looking forward to developing relations with Italy, working with it in the context of the solid partnership that unites the two countries in order to develop relations".

Rady, Sisi's spokesman since 2017 and Egypt's next ambassador to Rome where he is expected to move soon, added that Cairo wants to develop the "bilateral relationship" with Italy "

Libya, a major producer of oil and gas and therefore a potential positive factor in any energy crisis as Tajani himself underlined, is also the main transit point for illegal migration to Italy, favored by a substantial split in the country between Tripolin West and Haftarian East.

The minister is openly convinced that an agreement between Turkey and Egypt, which have influence over Tripoli and Benghazi respectively, could facilitate the holding of elections and the consequent stabilization of Libya.

However, Tajani has already underlined that relations with Egypt cannot cancel the case of Giulio Regeni and Rome is working towards a solution to that of Patrick Zaki.
