"There is no culture on Shabbat, but you will pay taxes": although the storm is quiet - the players are protesting Israel today

2023-01-23T12:38:06.694Z

Against the background of the publications that the Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar ordered to examine the project "Israeli Shabbat", which is centered on the idea of making culture accessible to youth and adults, especially in the peripheral areas, the two actors uploaded a particularly stinging video in protest of this

Today (Monday) Mia Dagan uploaded a video to her Instagram account with her colleague, actor Uri Pepper, which at first seemed like a routine record of their lives as actors.

In the video Pepper asks her to film an audition with him.

But then the two linked the situation to the news that the Minister of Culture and Sports, Knesset member Miki Zohar, ordered a reexamination of the activities of the "Israeli Shabbat" program, which provides culture in the periphery - and stung him for it in a particularly sarcastic way.

"When Uri Pepper says to me, come take a small audition with me," Dagan said at the beginning of her speech against a background of footage of Pepper preparing the set for the audition.

"And you say 'the house is messy, I can't'," Uri quoted.

"What is the solution?" asked Dagan.

"The solution - bring the house with you. Blue background. We turn every place into a studio. Do you also want? Call," he joked.

Uri Pepper and Mia Dagan in a stinging protest

"But not on Shabbat. And not at the entrance of Shabbat," Dagan commented with obvious sarcasm.

"And not on Shabbat cultural day," Pepper also sarcastically emphasized.

"Because there is no culture. There is no culture on Shabbat," Mia pointed out.

"On Sunday you want to have culture, but not on Shabbat," she added.

"No on Friday, Shabbat, but you will pay taxes," it was said pointedly.

"Be civilized and pay taxes," Dagan agreed with him.

Against this background, Dagan added some more sarcasm and criticism, this time in writing on the video in question.

"It was taken on a weekday," she emphasized.

"The presenters are actors, only on a weekday."

We note that this morning Miki Zohar tweeted and denied the allegations.

"So after the false media spin, here is the truth as it is," he wrote on Twitter.

"I have never said or thought of canceling events or denying funding to cultural institutions that operate on Shabbat. On the contrary, when I took office I made it clear unequivocally that we will preserve the status quo and the freedom of the citizens of Israel.

that I will not interfere with the football games on Saturday.

Instead of the state, there is a status quo in Israel which, unfortunately, the outgoing minister violated in the last year, and for the first time in the history of the Ministry of Culture, he decided to actively initiate an activity that takes place precisely on Shabbat.

Which never was.

The Ministry of Culture's response to the statements of Mia Dagan and Uri Pepper had not yet been received by the time of publication of this news.
