If bacteria and fungi spread in damp corners of the apartment, it can end badly.
It gets difficult in winter, especially in rooms without windows.
Everyone knows that: You want or should save on heating.
At the same time, the humidity in the room must not be too high - otherwise annoying mold could form in the apartment.
This is exactly what you should avoid, because mold stains like those on the walls are not so easy to get rid of, and in case of doubt you are sitting on the damage.
Tips against mold in the apartment - despite the room without a window
So that this doesn't happen in the first place, you should follow a few tips - and know a few tricks, especially in the bathroom or other rooms without windows, such as the toilet or the storage room in the apartment.
1. Don't turn the heat down all the way in the bathroom
Don't save in the wrong place and leave the heating in rooms like the bathroom on at least a lower level - even when you're not in it.
Otherwise, the sudden difference between shower heat and condensation is too great, which promotes mold growth.
According to experts, the rule of thumb here is: from 16 degrees and below it becomes critical.
2. Observe the optimal humidity in rooms
Experts advise regularly checking the humidity in the home using a hygrometer.
This is a measuring instrument that shows the relative humidity in the room and that you can buy for little money.
If the humidity in the bathroom is constantly at 70 percent or even more, this encourages the formation of mold.
It is said that you are generally safe from an infestation if the humidity in the room is between 40 and 60 percent.

3. Ventilation in winter for air exchange
The rule of thumb when airing in winter is usually: Air out two to four times a day, between about five and ten minutes each time.
In rooms without windows, you should instead open the door wide and, for example, open the window in the room across the way to let the air in.
You can also place a fan in the open door to achieve a similar effect if air exchange between the rooms is otherwise not so easy.

4. Remove dirt from old ventilation and replace filter
The ventilation technology may not be the latest in every bathroom.
As the sustainability portal Utopia.de
recommends, an older ventilation shaft can
at least be cleaned.
No special cleaning agent is required for this, just a damp cloth.
The advice is to remove the grille and cover of the exhaust duct and wipe the inside clean, replacing the filter with a new one if necessary.
You often notice a “big difference” afterwards.
If the air shaft is very dirty, it is advisable to ask a specialist and, in the case of a rented apartment, to get the landlord on board.
5. Get a dehumidifier for rooms without windows
If none of that helps, the portal recommends purchasing a dehumidifier.
“These devices can filter several liters of water from the air.
A dehumidifier is particularly well suited for the basement, as ventilation is particularly difficult there,” explains
Utopia.de.
Basically, such a device is recommended for all rooms without windows.

Another tip: In poorly ventilated bathrooms, it is better to dry the tiles after showering – as well as the joints, which are particularly susceptible to the accumulation of bacteria and fungi.
Overall, make sure that you clean the bathroom, including the shower and toilet, regularly and thoroughly.
You should also regularly wipe the floors wet and free them from dust - so that bacteria and fungi don't spread in the first place.
