"Remembrance Day is not a moment dedicated to compassionate caress towards the Jews: it is a day of assumption of responsibility for everyone, citizens and institutions, central and local".
This was stated by the president of the Union of Italian Jewish communities,
Noemi Di Segni
, speaking at a conference promoted in the Prefecture of Trieste, in view of the Day of Remembrance.
"Shoah is not just Germany and the Nazis, it is also Italy and fascism," she added.
"The anti-Jewish laws - recalled Di Segni - were announced here in Trieste 85 years ago. A crazy speech from the first word to the last. But the crowded square cheered and applauded. Today it seems to us a delusional vision that could never happen in a square Italian, nor virtual ones. So why did what seems impossible happen? Why did it happen! How do we relate to this past and what have we done in the 85 years since then to be convinced that it can never happen again? Not just never again the extermination but also never again a square that praises words of hatred".
"It is important to understand - he added - that the Shoah is not only Germany, Auschwitz, Nazis. It is also Italy in every street and square. Italians and above all the fascist regime. It is also to understand - and act with consequent coherence - that fascism is the CSR since 1943 were not only bad for the Jews but bad for all of Italy".
Today, Di Segni reiterated, is "a day of remembrance and a day of responsibility and the UCEI together with all the institutions will continue in their commitment to reaffirm and demand consistency if we want to go forward in building a country that embraces that concept of homeland ".
