"It was a complex council, marked by serious episodes that affected it. Nonetheless, thanks to the contribution of its members, the Superior Council tried to overcome the deep tensions produced by those events, to ensure the correct functioning of the judicial offices ".

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said it on the occasion of the inauguration of the new CSM at the Quirinale.

"The Council's action during the pandemic emergency proved to be particularly fruitful, during which it supported managers in defining organizational solutions capable of guaranteeing the performance of judicial activity", he adds.

"The tasks that the Constitution and the law entrust to the CSM are aimed at ensuring the independence of the judiciary, a pillar of our democracy and guaranteed by the Constitution".

"Through the transparent and efficient exercise of autonomous government - continues the head of state - the Superior Council must guarantee, in the best possible way, the autonomy and independence of the jurisdiction; and must guarantee the judicial offices the best level of professionalism of the magistrates,

"The judiciary has in its constitutional values, in its context and in its history, the resources to face the difficulties and to ensure - with authority and credibility - respect for the law which is essential for the life and civil growth of society".

Mattarella also greeted the outgoing members of the CSM in a ceremony at the Quirinale.

"I extend a cordial greeting to the vice president of the Senate, to the President of the Constitutional Court, to the Vice President of the Chamber, to the Minister of Justice and to all those present and a welcome to the new members of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, present at the farewell ceremony of the Councilors outgoing, to whom, in particular, this meeting is dedicated".

He then expressed "heartfelt thanks to the Vice-President and the outgoing directors for their commitment and for the activity carried out during their mandate" saying he was "certain that the new Board will be able to carry out its functions within the framework of correct institutional relations, in the pre-eminent interest of the Republic".
