For the first time, a German film has the chance to win an Oscar in the main category. "Nothing New in the West" received a total of nine nominations. My favorite is the sci-fi comedy »Everything Everywhere All at Once«.

A German film has been nominated in the most important category of the Oscars: »Nothing New in the West« by director Edward Berger is one of ten candidates in the running for the award for the best film.

It also received eight other nominations for: visual effects, cinematography, production design, make-up & hairstyling, sound design, score, adapted screenplay and best international film.

»Nothing New in the West«, filmed based on the book by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929, shows the horror of the First World War from the perspective of a young German soldier.

Austrian Felix Kammerer plays the leading role.

The science fiction comedy »Everything Everywhere All at Once« is the favorite for the award in March with a total of eleven nominations.

Directed by the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

The Irish tragic comedy »The Banshees of Inisherin« received nine nominations alongside »Nothing New in the West«.

Steven Spielberg's most recent work »The Fabelmans«, which has autobiographical traits, made it onto the nomination list seven times.

»Top Gun: Maverick« received six nominations, »Black Panther: Wakanda Forever« five.

James Cameron's »Avatar« is included four times.

In addition to the German production, the following are also nominated for best film: »Avatar: The Way of Water«, »The Banshees of Inisherin«, »Top Gun: Maverick«, »Everything Everywhere All at Once«, »Elvis«, »The Fabelmans« , »Tár«, »Triangle of Sadness« and »Women Talking«.

Cate Blanchett (»Tár«), Ana de Armas (»Blonde«), Andrea Riseborough (»To Leslie«), Michelle Williams (»The Fabelmans«) and Michelle Yeoh (» Everything Everywhere All at Once«).

Best Actor: Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living) .

In addition to »Nothing New in the West« the following were nominated for best international film: »Argentina, 1985« (Argentina), »Close« (Belgium), »EO« (Poland) and »The Quiet Girl« (Ireland).

The last Oscar for a German film was in 2007

"I'm a bit overwhelmed," said director Edward Berger in an interview with the German Press Agency on Tuesday afternoon.

With the chance of winning the best film, they would have broken a small sound barrier, so to speak.

Of course, that rarely happens for an international film.

"And I'm incredibly happy and proud of it."

The last German film to win a foreign language Oscar was in 2007 with the Stasi drama »The Lives of Others« by director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

The last nomination so far was for »Werk ohne Autor« also by Henckel von Donnersmarck from 2018, also in the category best international film.

It is the first time that a German production has made it into the main category "Best Film" and received so many nominations.

"Nothing New in the West" was produced for Netflix by the Berlin company Amusement Park.

The Oscars will be awarded for the 95th time on March 12th.

They are considered the most important award in the film industry.
