In 2022 in Italy it is a record for donations of organs, tissues and hematopoietic stem cells, for the first time above 1,800

(1,830, +3.7%).

Transplants also performed well (3,887, +2.5%).

The National Health Service Transplant Network confirmed the growth trend

already shown in 2021, completing the total recovery of pre-Covid levels, and in many cases scoring the best absolute performances ever achieved.

It emerges from the preliminary report prepared by the National Transplant Center presented by the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci with the director of the Cnt Massimo Cardillo and the president of the ISS Silvio Brusaferro.

Schillaci, promote donations.

16/4 the day

In 2022 there was a "record for organ donations and this led to a significant increase in transplants with the second best result ever, equal to 3887. However, there are still many patients waiting for a transplant and the needs are not the same. satisfied: we must therefore further promote the culture of donation".

Health Minister Orazio Schillaci said this at the presentation of the report of the National Transplant Center (Cnt), announcing that the national day of organ donation will be held on Sunday 16 April and the annual communication campaign will start.

Still too many no, raise awareness

There are still too many 'No' declarations of will in favor of organ donation.

It emerges from the report of the National Transplant Center (Cnt).

The declarations of willingness to donate filed in the Transplant Information System as at 31 December 2022 exceeded 14 and a half million: 72% consents and 28% oppositions.

Those registered in 2022 alone in Italian Municipalities through the CIE system (electronic identity card) were 2.7 million, with a percentage of no of 31.8% (+0.7% compared to 2021).

In general, 55.5% of the citizens who requested the document expressed themselves (positively or negatively), while the others decided not to register any indication.

The oppositions registered during life remain high, especially in the southern regions where they touch or in some cases exceed 40%:

a figure that confirms the need to raise awareness especially in two age groups, the 18-30 year olds (among whom the percentage of opposition is higher than the 30-40 year olds, and this is particularly valid for the new adults) and the over 60, among whom the belief that donation is impossible for personal reasons is frequent.

The recent liver transplant performed in Tuscany thanks to the donation of an almost 101-year-old woman (the longest ever in the world) demonstrates that age is no obstacle to donation.
