Many of us tend to shower before going to bed, but sleep experts explain that it is highly recommended to leave a space between the shower and bedtime to allow the hair to dry before lying on the bed.

There are several reasons for this - and one of them is quite disgusting and will surely convince you to give up this habit.

Those of you who wash your hair before going to bed will often prefer to let it dry naturally instead of drying it with a towel and/or a face because it saves time and effort.

However, it turns out that this small concession can harm the health of your hair and body, make you cold unnecessarily and even create mold on your pillows and sheets.

Sleep expert, Max Stephens of The Sleep Checklist, warns of the dangers of going to bed with wet hair and offers alternatives for those who have trouble giving up the habit.

Max explains that the structural integrity of your hair weakens when it's wet, making it more prone to breakage.

He said: "When you toss and turn during sleep, your hair is under pressure. This pressure can cause hair to break - and when your hair is wet, it's much easier to damage it than if it's dry."

Damp hair can also lead to bacteria growth in the bed or on the pillow, which can lead to facial acne and dandruff.

The bacteria can also cause breathing problems if mold forms.

Max said: "If you must go to bed with wet hair, invest in waterproof pillowcases as this will prevent moisture from seeping into your pillows and preventing the build-up of mold and harmful bacteria."

He added: "Smooth fabrics cause less friction when you move around while you sleep - and they also help keep the natural oils inside your hair, which will result in healthier hair."

More hair problems

panicked by the amount of hair that falls out in the shower?

This is when you should start worrying

You won't believe how much dirt is hidden in your hair brush - and this is the way to clean it

as well, at a time when we are trying to avoid the cold in general, going to bed with wet hair will only make your body colder and make you increase the heating to compensate for the loss of body heat.

Max adds that your electricity costs will also increase because you'll be spending more time styling your hair in the morning: "Running the hair dryer may seem like an extra expense that you don't need right now. Besides, letting your hair dry overnight is not only bad for you - it's also going to consume you More time to shape it back in the morning," he noted.

Can it make you sick?

"It probably belongs to the type of folklore beliefs that things that cool the body can cause you to get a cold," says Dr. William Schaffner, professor of medicine in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Although these myths are persistent and refuse to disappear from popular culture, Dr. Schaffner says they were debunked a long time ago. It is

true that the likelihood of catching a cold increases in the cold winter months, but it has to do with the way viruses that harm the respiratory tract multiply and become contagious. "You can't catch a cold just because it's cold To you," says the doctor.

So what are the options?

"One of the simplest ways to reduce the risks associated with sleeping with wet hair is to reduce the number of times a week you wash your hair," Max said, "this will help minimize the damage you do to your hair."

"Besides," he adds, "moist hair that has been air-dried for an hour before bed may help. Therefore, it is recommended to wash your hair earlier in the day and arrange the schedule so that you do not go to bed with wet hair. This will benefit both the quality of your hair and your health."

Despite all that has been said here, there are countless people who go to bed with wet hair often and even regularly, and they are perfectly fine.

In some ways sleeping with wet hair may also have benefits.

One study showed that lowering the temperature of the head at night helps reduce the metabolic activity of the brain at night in a way that promotes anesthesia and restorative sleep.

So even if there are negligible health concerns arising from sleeping with wet hair,
