Many mistakes are made when loading the dishwasher. Certain pieces of crockery and pots should not be put in the dishwasher at all, because they could break.

Germans love their dishwasher.

No wonder, after all, it saves us the annoying and tedious washing up by hand.

However, you should always wash some parts by hand so that you can enjoy them for a long time.

1. Never put coated pans and pots in the dishwasher

It is better to wash coated pans and pots by hand.

Both the aggressive cleaning agents and the cleaning salt attack the coating.

As a result, it becomes dull and loses its non-stick properties.

In the worst case, the coating even comes off and cracks form.

Some mistakes can also happen when cooking with Teflon pans.

2. Plastic

Not all plastic items survive a cycle in the dishwasher.

With the sometimes high temperatures in the dishwasher of up to 70° Celsius, plastic parts can discolour, warp or even melt.

For this reason, only put plates, mugs or the like in the dishwasher if they are marked as “dishwasher-safe” or “dishwasher-safe”.

You can see this from the imprint on the underside of the dishes.

3. Wooden spoons and wooden chopping boards

Wooden spoons, cutting boards, spatulas and other wooden cooking utensils also do not tolerate heat well.

The wood warps, becomes porous or cracked and is then hardly usable.

Therefore, the advice here: always wash by hand!

4. Cutting knife

If you own really good chef's knives, you should treat them well so that they remain sharp.

Unfortunately, this also means: never put the cutting knife in the dishwasher!

The acids and alkalis in dishwashing tabs and powder cause blunt blades.

5. Crystal glass

Glasses and bowls made of crystal glass must also not be placed in the dishwasher.

Otherwise the glass loses its special shine and becomes milky.

6. Objects made of metal such as aluminum, copper or tin

With the exception of stainless cutlery, it's not a good idea to put metal things in the dishwasher.

All objects made of aluminium, copper, tin, brass and bronze can discolour there.

Bialetti, for example (Italian espresso makers) or other aluminum kitchen utensils were anodized to make them more robust.

In the dishwasher, this coating is destroyed by the cleaning agent and the aluminum turns black.

It is unclear whether this is harmful to health – in any case, it is not nice.

However, tarnished aluminum can be made sparkling clean again with baking soda.

7. Do not put thermos flasks and vacuum mugs in the dishwasher

In order to keep drinks warm, vacuum mugs and jugs have a vacuum layer between the inner and outer wall.

The vacuum seal can be damaged in the dishwasher, allowing air to enter.

Thermos flasks and mugs then lose their insulating properties.

Incidentally, stubborn discoloration in thermos flasks can be solved wonderfully with home remedies.
