A sexton was killed in a machete attack in Algeciras, southern Spain.
The alleged perpetrator injured four other people, including a priest, in at least two churches on Wednesday evening, state television broadcaster RTVE and other Spanish media report, citing the police.
The Ministry of the Interior speaks of a "stabbing attack".
The alleged attacker was arrested shortly after the crime.
The public prosecutor's office has launched a preliminary investigation into suspected terrorism, writes the newspaper El País.
Background of fact unclear
The 25-year-old man is said to have first entered the church of San Isidro.
He then reportedly ran to the La Palma church, just 200 meters away.
Pictures show that the victim's body is apparently lying in the forecourt of the church.
The attacker should not have a criminal record or be otherwise known to the police.
The background of the fact is unclear.
