"Not a simple rehabilitation": Stomach shortening surgery in Turkey almost ended in disaster Israel today

A 40-year-old woman was rushed to Meir Hospital after her surgery, suffering from a severe infection • "I was a healthy woman and one day everything collapsed," she tells "Israel Hayom" • Experts warn: the surgeries in Turkey are dangerous

A woman was hospitalized in critical condition at the Meir Medical Center after undergoing gastric bypass surgery in Turkey.

The doctors at Meir saved her life and warn against operations without preparation and follow-up.

The woman, in her 40s, arrived at Meir Hospital about a week ago in serious condition after suffering from severe abdominal pain after a "mini-bypass" gastric bypass surgery she underwent about a week earlier in Turkey.

"In the imaging test the patient underwent upon her arrival, a severe abdominal infection was discovered as a result of a hole in the connection between the stomach and intestine that caused a significant leak of stomach contents into the abdominal cavity, and she arrived in a life-threatening condition," explains Dr. Pavel Shmolevsky, director of the bariatric surgery service at Meir.

"She was immediately admitted to the operating room, where she underwent initial surgery to stabilize her condition, and was transferred to a general intensive care unit for further treatment. A day later, when her condition stabilized, she was admitted to a follow-up operation in which the failed connection was resected and a complete bypass was performed. Unfortunately, she will need surgery more and a difficult rehabilitation procedure," said Dr. Shmolevsky.

"Production line"

"Most of my life I was thin," explains the patient.

"In recent years, I started to gain and lose weight more often and reached a weight of 87 kg.

I knew that in Israel this weight is not suitable for bariatric surgery, and I decided to go for surgery in Turkey.

"We landed in Turkey and met the company's agent who accompanied us to the hotel and the hospital. Before the operation, I didn't even have blood tests done."

"During the hours I waited for the surgery, I saw the 'production line' of the patients being operated on. I remembered that only a few months earlier I had seen an article about a woman who died after such an operation, but I naively chose to think that 'it won't happen to me' and went into the surgery. I went out to ventilate a little the next day, and I started to feel Strong pains in my back. The pains worsened, and on the flight to Israel they were already unbearable and I could not stand on my feet.

"From the moment I landed in Israel, the pain only got worse. I tried to treat it with painkillers, but two days later I felt like I was really fainting and my family took me to Meir Hospital, where they didn't wait a moment and immediately realized that it was a serious injury following the surgery I had," she says.

"not worth it"

"In these types of surgeries, the stomach is cut and a kind of small stomach known as a 'pouch' is created to which the loop of the small intestine is attached in order to reduce the size of the stomach and thus the amount of food the person consumes, and especially its absorption in the intestine," explains Dr. Shmolevsky. "The surgery is designed to help in losing weight and treating the complications of obesity and the secondary diseases associated with it that overweight people often suffer from.

In Israel there are clear and strict criteria, and it is necessary to go through a committee."

"I want to appeal to everyone who is considering undergoing the surgery and warn them that the situation can get complicated," the patient concludes.

"I was a healthy woman, and one day everything collapsed and I can't get out of bed. I want to thank the teams at Meir and hope that with this publication I will be able to save the lives of others. It's just not worth it."

Dr. David Guitein, member of the board of the Israeli Society for Bariatric Surgery: "We see severe complications in those operated on in Turkey that have not been seen in Israel for a long time.

We in the union cannot issue a warning, but we do recommend undergoing the surgery according to the indications in Israel."
