(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 26 - The drama of the river Po continues: despite the rains it remains dry.

This was stated by the Anbi Observatory's weekly report on water resources, from which it emerges that "the water crisis is endemic in the north, while the alluvial specter reappears in the centre-south: without new infrastructures, the situation is increasingly serious".

For Francesco Vincenzi, president of Anbi (National association of consortia for the management and protection of the territory and irrigation water) "it is necessary to create infrastructures to guarantee homogeneous water reserves for the country, under penalty of abandoning any prospect of food self-sufficiency".

In Piedmont, the levels of all watercourses are decreasing but "it is the Po that best represents the image of an endless hydrological crisis" explains the Anbi Observatory, indicating that in Turin this deficit stands at around 50%, but in other stations of detection exceeds 80%, extending this condition also in Lombardy and Emilia Romagna where, in Piacenza, it records new historic lows.

"The critical water condition of the Po river has been dragging on since December 2020 and conditions the agricultural economy, as well as the agri-food sector of the main Italian food valley and recognized worldwide excellence: the Po Valley" highlights Vincenzo.

In the North, the levels of the great lakes "remain well below average" and many rivers are at very low levels.

To significantly enjoy the rainfall,

explains the Anbi Observatory, it is instead the Valle d'Aosta with the Dora Baltea which has a flow rate almost five times higher than the historical average for January.

Rainfall exploit in the Marche region, where the rivers have swollen, causing fears of new flood events.

It was a difficult week in Campania where, after "water bombs" with about 100 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, floods occurred in the Caserta and Benevento areas with the Calore, Sarno and Volturno rivers overflowing, the level of which increased by over 6 meters in 2 days.

Garigliano reached 8.58 meters from 1.38 a year ago.

"The reappearance of flood events which, albeit limited, have caused extensive damage, reproposes the other side of a difficult hydraulic management,

from Parmigiano Reggiano to Grana Padano to Parma ham or Culatello di Zibello up to fruit and vegetables, the production of the Po Valley represents the spearhead of Made in Italy food.
