Whom the bailiff threatens and who not.

Kassel - For millions of Germans, there will soon be mail from the contribution service of the public broadcaster, as the GEZ has been officially called since 2013.

From January 10th until probably the end of June, the contribution service has been sending out its third comparison of registration data.

For some households, this letter could have unpleasant consequences.

In the past year, uncooperative recipients were threatened with double payment.

On the other hand, 100,000 people have been written to by the GEZ in the past who are exempt from broadcasting fees.

In order to avoid this, the comparison of registration data is about ensuring that all residential units that are subject to contributions are actually recorded in the system of public broadcasting.

It's been a while since the last comparison.

The last comparisons were made in 2013 and 2018. If you refuse to answer the questionnaire, the contribution service threatens you with a visit from the bailiff, as

GEZ writes to "unassignable adults" by the end of the year

In order to be able to carry out the comparison, all the necessary data is sent to the authorities by the residents' registration offices.

The target group includes all persons of legal age to whom the contribution service of the public service broadcaster cannot assign a registered apartment.

In order to find out whether a contribution has already been paid for the respective apartment or whether the person has to be registered as a contribution payer, the former GEZ compares the list of residents' registration offices and writes "adults who cannot be assigned" by the end of the year.

Among other things, it is also possible that adult contributors who have already been registered will receive mail.

In these cases, however, there is an error in the database.

GEZ: If the letter to the contribution is ignored, warnings and an enforcement order are threatened

In order to avoid unpleasant consequences, the addressee should reply to the GEZ letter in writing within two weeks.

This also applies if contributions have already been paid and the letter ended up in the mailbox by mistake.

If the letter from the authority is not answered, a reminder will follow after two weeks.

If this is also ignored, the contribution service automatically creates a corresponding account for which the former GEZ demands contributions.

If this is not followed either, there is a risk of reminders and, in the worst case, an enforcement order.

It is therefore advisable to reply to the GEZ letter promptly.

If a GEZ contribution has already been paid for the respective residential unit, the authority can be informed of this by sending the corresponding contribution number.

Since 2021, the amount to be paid quarterly has been EUR 18.36.

In the case of a new registration, the authority collects EUR 55.08 for the first three months.

If no contribution has yet been paid for the residential unit, the authority will collect the amount retrospectively.

  • Residents' registration offices transmit registration data to the contribution service (GEZ) if they have changed

  • In the nationwide comparison of registrations, the data of all adult citizens are transmitted in order to clarify the obligation to pay contributions

  • The comparison is intended to ensure that the data in the contribution service is up-to-date

  • The legal data regulations apply

But not everyone has to pay the fee.

For some people there are exceptions that allow them to be exempted from the broadcasting fee.
