No more cash payments at Kaufland and Aldi?

After a German technology chain only accepts card payments, the grocers comment on their plans.

There has been a lot of discussion in recent weeks about the end of EC cards when shopping.

As a large grocer, Kaufland had spoken to

echo24.de

about the consequences for customers.

In 2023, quite a few things will change in the supermarket.

In addition to the changes in the classic Girocard, cash payments could soon be threatened with extinction.

As the news magazine “Spiegel” reported just a few days ago, the German technology chain Gravis, which is closely linked to Apple, is abolishing cash payments.

Accordingly, the measure applies nationwide to all 40 branches.

The amount of the purchase is not decisive.

Does the example make the rounds now?

How do food giants like Kaufland, Aldi and Lidl plan?

Without cash payments at Kaufland, Aldi and Co.?

After all, the end of the Maestro system on the EC card does not mean the end of card payments in Germany for the owner.

There are also alternatives.

But do without cash payments in shops altogether?

As a result of the corona pandemic, many customers have actually made friends with paying exclusively by card.

Kaufland and Aldi could therefore also consider taking a new approach to payment methods in the branches.

Company:

Kaufland

Head office:

Neckarsulm

Founding:

1984 in Neckarsulm

Sales volume:

21 billion euros (2019)

For Gravis there are economic advantages behind the decision.

The company explains to the “Spiegel” that cashless payments for retailers are

“cheaper, easier”

and it also enables

“faster processes”

.

This is how Kaufland plans to use the payment methods in its own branches

When asked by

echo24.de

, Kaufland made a clear statement about completely cashless payment.

The grocery giant from Neckarsulm explains: "We want to give our customers the opportunity to pay in the way that is most convenient for them.

Of course, our customers can continue to pay with cash in our branches.”

The company from the Schwarz Group also states that from a purchase value of 10 euros it is also possible for customers to “withdraw cash at the cash registers with their Girocard”.

And the discounter Aldi Süd has also made a clear statement about a future without cash payments in their own branches.

Aldi has a clear opinion on purely cashless payments

As the company states to our editorial team, "purely cashless payment is currently not planned for Aldi Süd".

It also says: "All common means of payment, including cash, will continue to be accepted."

With the focus on all common means of payment, Kaufland and Aldi should currently still be in line with the trend of the majority in German retail.

According to various studies, cash is still the most popular means of payment for more than half of customers when shopping.

Lidl leaves all payment options open to customers

At Lidl you see it similarly to the big sister company Kaufland.

We want our customers to have a pleasant shopping experience.

The discounter chain explains: "This also means that we offer you the choice between different payment options in all Lidl branches throughout Germany."

Customers could therefore pay with cash, the Girocard and credit or debit cards.

According to the company, the payment can also be made contactless.

Lidl also points out that in the branches you also have the option of making contactless payments with your smartphone.
