Dagmar Berghoff began reading the news in the Tagesschau

more than 10,000 times with "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen"

, sober and neutral, as befits a news anchor.

When she made her first appearance in front of millions of television viewers on the news program in 1976, a new era began.

Whether she would succeed in conquering the hearts of the audience was uncertain at the beginning.

According to media reports, a male substitute spokesman was on hand to be on the safe side.

In the interview book "Good evening, my ladies and gentlemen" she talks to the Tagesschau announcer Constantin Schreiber about her life and career.

In a conversation with his predecessor Dagmar Berghoff, today's Tagesschau announcer Constantin Schreiber opens up the unique story of her eventful and moving life.

Where initially there was little to suggest that she would one day write television history - she had to work hard to earn the money for drama school - Dagmar Berghoff became a role model and pioneer for a whole generation of women when she started as a spokeswoman for the Tagesschau in 1976.

Dagmar Berghoff was a trained actress and not the first newsreader on German television.

It all started in 1963 with Anne-Rose Neumann, who

moderated the

current camera in the GDR, followed by Wibke Bruhns in 1971 on ZDF.

No other spokesperson gave the

Tagesschau

a face for 23 years.

The doubts were very big at the beginning.

She told the NDR that the then chief spokesman for the

Tagesschau

, Karl-Heinz Köpcke, was skeptical when he was presented with a blonde spokeswoman.

For many years, the prejudice persisted that women couldn't do the news because they didn't know anything about politics and burst into tears when news of an accident happened.

Ulrich Wickert, longtime moderator of the

Tagesthemen

, has had great success with his crime stories about Jacques Riceau.

With "Nachts im Kanzleramt" (advertising link), Marietta Slomka has published a non-fiction book with everything worth knowing about politics.
