Freezer bags are the classic companion in the kitchen for freezing food.
But are they also sustainable?
Or are they more like glasses?
Munich – Everyone knows such situations: too much of something was cooked, but the bread is too much and could be frozen.
It is not uncommon for consumers to ask themselves the question: glass or plastic?
What is better to freeze food in the refrigerator?
But is that really sustainable?
You don't throw the food in the trash, but in the end plastic waste is created by the used freezer bags, as reported by

Freezing food: bags or jars – which is more sustainable?
Let's start by throwing away the bags.
This does not always have to happen: according to consumer advocates and manufacturers, they can also be used several times.
However, not with every food and they must be intact.
Before using it again, the freezer bag should be rinsed out thoroughly with hot water, advises Daniela Krehl from the Bavarian Consumer Advice Center.
Then it should be turned over and hung up to dry.
This is particularly important if animal products have been stored beforehand and fruit is to be put in afterwards.

Of course, freezer bags are more difficult to clean than solid containers.
And according to Kerstin Effers from the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer center, the manufacturers are also rather silent when it comes to the reusability of their bags.
Freeze food: multiple use of freezer bags for bread or other solid foods easier and more hygienic
The manufacturer Toppits writes: The multiple use of freezer bags is easier and more hygienic for bread or other solid foods than, for example, for liquid and very greasy foods.
Kerstin Effers therefore recommends glass or stainless steel containers for fatty products.
And even if it might be obvious: food should not be frozen in disposable packaging such as margarine tins, ice cream boxes or yoghurt pots.
The consumer advice centers warn that plastic components could migrate into the food.
