Many of the several hundred people who demonstrated against a refugee shelter in front of the meeting building of the district council of Northwest Mecklenburg on Thursday evening were apparently assigned to the right-wing scene.

This is reported by the NDR and the "Bild" newspaper.

According to the NDR, it was "well-known right-wing extremists from the region and hooligans".

The "Bild" newspaper quotes a police spokesman as saying that among the participants was "a strikingly high number of right-wing extremists, neo-Nazis, Reich citizens and football hooligans".

He estimated the number of people who were prepared to use violence to be “well over 100”.

According to the police, up to 700 people took part in the registered meeting.

District council approved construction of refugee accommodation

According to the NDR, a demonstrator had meanwhile gained access to the building under a pretext and tried to open the door from the inside so that other people could enter the building.

Police said some participants tried to enter the building but were blocked and pushed back by police.

The district council approved the construction of refugee accommodation in Upahl (Northwest Mecklenburg district) on Thursday.

The district announced that the construction of the containerized facility for 400 refugees could begin.

Those attending the gathering expressed their displeasure, police said.

There had already been protests against the planned accommodation in Upahl.

Opponents criticized that with around 400 places it was too big for such a small community.

pyrotechnics and verbal aggression

The forces were confronted with verbal aggression, the police said.

Unknown persons would also have repeatedly ignited pyrotechnics.

Appropriate procedures for administrative offenses had been initiated.

In addition, the suspicion of serious trespassing and violations of the Assembly Act are being investigated.

Around 120 police officers from Wismar, Rostock and Neubrandenburg, among others, were deployed.

The spokesman for the district did not want to comment on the incidents when asked by the dpa news agency.

In the evening, the Greens spoke of an attack on democracy.

State Chairwoman Katharina Horn said: »Refugees need protection from war and persecution.

Our task is to take them in, provide them with dignified accommodation and guarantee their physical and psychological safety.«
