"New year, new Miley" - that's how the pop singer Miley Cyrus announced her new single shortly after New Year's Eve.
In the music video for "Flowers" she shows herself confidently in an extravagant golden dress and dances first in the Hollywood Hills and later in a men's suit.
"I can buy myself flowers" is the catchy line.
She's enough for herself - that's the message of the song, which last week broke the Spotify streaming record for a week with more than 96 million streams and topped the charts worldwide, including in the UK, Australia, Canada and China.
In »Flowers«, Cyrus supposedly deals with her divorce from actor Liam Hemsworth (»The Hunger Games«, »33«), it is a hymn for female self-determination after lovesickness.
Cyrus sings about the fire in their house.
The single was released on January 13, on the Australian actor's birthday.
The two had an on-off relationship for many years.
They divorced about two years ago.
Even Gloria Gaynor, whose 1978 song "I Will Survive" ranks as perhaps the best possible breakup soundtrack, is smitten with Cyrus' hit.
"I'm in Nashville working on new music and just heard 'Flowers' for the first time," she wrote on Twitter.
“Your song carries the torch of self-empowerment and encourages everyone to find the strength within themselves to persevere and thrive.
Well done, Miley!"
