Carlo Taveccio

died this morning.

The former president of the Football Federation, a position held from 2014 to 2017, was 79 years old.

In his career as a manager he was also president of the National Amateur League.

Tavecchio had resigned from the leadership of the FIGC, in November 2017, after Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.

In January 2021 he had become president of the LND Lombardia, the regional amateur committee that he had led until 1999. The funeral will be held next Monday, January 30, in Ponte Lambro.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of a true football fan like Carlo Tavecchio. A friend with great human qualities, very committed to social issues, and a well-prepared manager, who was able to give voice and dignity to amateur clubs and who did not never gave up on innovating".

The President of the FIGC,

Gabriele Gravina

, expresses his condolences for the death of the former federal president in a statement.

"The impetus for the development of women's football in Italy through the union with men's professional clubs, the introduction of Goal Line Technology and the VAR, as well as the choice on the international field to support the current top management of UEFA and FIFA, have been his happy intuitions" concludes Gravina.

"Carlo Tavecchio was a friend of mine and a great manager - is the memory of Franco Carraro, current President of the FIGC's Paralympic and Experimental Football Division - He loved football viscerally, especially amateur football, to such an extent that he didn't want to miss the assembly of the Lombardy Regional Committee which he presided over, despite his physical conditions were not the best.
