Marie Kondo's home is messy now — and she's okay with that

Her rigorous decluttering technique made Marie Kondo famous. The Japanese best-selling author has now admitted that since the birth of her third child, there have been more important things in her life than perfect order.

The food burns, the child cries and the home descends into chaos - who doesn't know it?

Apparently not even Marie Kondo, the Queen of Order.

The US newspaper »Washington Post« recently reported Kondo's confession: »My home is messy«.

But that's obviously not a problem for the tidying-up expert.

Since the birth of her third child, she hasn't cleaned up as much as she used to, reports Kondo on the occasion of the publication of her new book.

This is no longer just about the order of physical spaces, but about how to create an inner order for yourself.

"Tidying up means dealing with all the 'things' in your life," Kondo writes in the book.

"So what do you really want to fix?"

Apparently not her living room anymore.

»One should adapt the tidying concept to one’s own life«

"The way I spend my time is the right way for me at this time in this life," Kondo said in a webinar.

So far, as a "professional cleaner," she has done her best to keep her home clean at all times.

Apparently that's different now: "I gave that up in a way that's good for me," Kondo said.

She understood that it was more important for her to spend time at home with her children.

Nevertheless, Kondo still has positive associations with tidying up.

She recently said in a SPIEGEL interview: »I still enjoy tidying up, even at home.

When I tidy our house, I think about how I can organize it better.

I find that satisfying.«

In a conversation, she recommends that parents who are overwhelmed should relax and deal with their own possibilities.

»You should adapt the clean-up concept to your own life.

And don't be so strict with yourself," Kondo told SPIEGEL.

In everyday life, she asks herself what would bring her more joy: having a tidy living room or playing with her children.

“And if my house sometimes gets a bit messy, then that's just the way it is.

I'm not mad at myself for that."

With this in mind: Leave your breakfast crumbs – and head out into the park.
