Now the government also wants to ban their attitude.

Vicco von Bülow aka Loriot meant well: "Life without a pug is possible, but pointless".

The quote is still unforgettable and known to countless people.

But for a long time now, people's love of pugs has become the biggest problem for the breed.

The dog breed is known for its overbreeding driven by the ideal of man.

Because over the years, the animals have developed more and more into what people found beautiful.

The result: flat snouts and extremely short noses.

But how the dog feels about it has been forgotten.

The animals suffer greatly from the consequences today, they can hardly breathe, become ill or become aggressive.

Since the pug is considered a “fashion dog”, it is particularly badly affected, which is why the Netherlands already banned the breeding of the dog breed in 2019.

Pugs can only be bred or sold if the nose is at least a third as long as the entire head.

However, such dogs are rare.

And this is exactly where the previous law reached its limits.

Norway has also banned two torture breeds.

Pug dog breeding banned in the Netherlands - but many wish come true abroad

People who really want a pug get their wish abroad.

That's why the husbandry should now be banned in the future, demands Minister of Agriculture Piet Adema.

“If we overbreed animals for their looks and the animals suffer as a result, then we are going too far.

In order for us to enjoy, the animals suffer.

That can't be, it has to stop," HR Inforadio

In addition to the pug, the ban would also affect overbred bulldogs, some pinscher species and the fold-eared cat.

But what about people who own a four-legged friend of one of these breeds?

The Dutch government allows them to keep their pets until they die.

After that, however, getting an overbred four-legged friend again is punishable, explains Adema.

The Dutch minister wants to introduce a corresponding draft law.

But this has not yet been worked out.

To do this, a few points would first have to be precisely defined.

For example, “what traits make animals suffer just so we find them cuter.

We must define these properties precisely.

And when we have done that, the ban can come," said Adema.
