With the spot gas price plummeting in January, we "will need to have a 33%" cut in January bills after a 23% increase in December.

This was estimated by Davide Tabarelli, president of Nomisma Energia, questioned by ANSA in view of the change that the Regulatory Authority for energy, networks and the environment (Arera) will communicate on February 2 on the January gas bill for protected customers.

"For the typical family, this is an annual saving of 712 euros for typical consumption of 1400 cubic meters per year", adds Tabarelli.

"There are now only two days left to have the average for the entire month of January 2023 of the spot price of gas, the PSV which moves in line with the TTF, but it is already possible to establish that it will be around 60 euros/MWh, against the 117 euro/MWh used by the Authority for bills for December 2022", explains Tabarelli, recalling that "at the time the increase in bills had been 23% to 1.5 euro per cubic meter for December 2022".

Now, however, "after the collapse, we will have to have a 33% cut to around 1 euro/mc", he adds, specifying that "this variation is determined by the raw material component, but other items could vary according to the needs of the Authority and result in a slightly different final price.

"Even more important is the fact that the new price towards 1 euro/mc is approximately 27% lower than the tariff of a year ago and this means that already in the February inflation rate, the regulated part of energy will mark a In fact - continues

-, it should be remembered that electricity bills were already reduced by 20% in the first quarter of 2023. Therefore, the inflation rate in February will probably begin to fall from 11.3% in December towards 10 % in January 2023 and then drop to single digits in the following months".

As for the electricity bills for the second quarter of 2023, "we will have to wait for the end of March, but even here, thanks to the collapse in electricity prices, a further 20% reduction is conceivable", adds the president of Nomisma Energy, who underlines: "This is excellent news, but it should not make us forget that the crisis is not over and the gas tariffs that will be expected for January are still 30% higher than those prior to 2022, while those of electricity they're still about double those before."
