She is pregnant in the fifth month with twins but is in the Milanese prison of San Vittore where there is no gynecologist.

It is the story of a prisoner awaiting trial whose pregnancy could be put at risk.

In the same structure there are 90 other female prisoners and no specialists.

So much so that last year, in July, another pregnant prisoner fell ill and was taken by ambulance to hospital but lost her baby.

"Milan represents an anomaly in Italy, and continues to envisage sending pregnant women to prison, putting their health and that of the child at risk, precisely because the structures are not adequate for this type of care - he says Valeria Verdolini, president of the Lombard office of Antigone, who raised the case - on 30 May an ordinance of the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office entered into force according to which it became mandatory for pregnant women or women with a one-year-old child and for whom an arrest warrant has been envisaged".

A decision that also raised several controversies in the Criminal Chamber, as the Public Prosecutor's Office had revoked a 2016 circular which recommended not to execute this type of arrest order.

"The prisoner received a pre-trial detention order from the ICAM (Minimum Custody Institute for Mother Prisoners) - as Antigone explains - but the mitigated custody facility does not provide 24-hour health coverage, and therefore we proceeded to place her at the Milan prison, where, however, there is no gynecologist".

Yet, adds Verdolini, "there should be a gynecologist in San Vittore, above all because 90 women are locked up there. There is availability but only by appointment. What if an emergency occurs?".

Today - says Antigone - the forces of order "are obliged, in the presence of an execution order,

Meanwhile, today an Italian prisoner committed suicide in Terni prison by hanging himself.

This was denounced by the Sarap prison police union according to which "despite the lightning-fast treatment and intervention of colleagues and doctors, it is not possible to avert the critical event. The serious shortage of personnel that the prison police experiences every day leads to a worrying and little attention to users, despite the many sacrifices made by the staff" says the national secretary Esposito Roberto.

Thunders the lawyer Giuseppe Caforio, Guarantor of prisoners in Umbria: "It is time to put an end to this massacre in prisons. This trickle of prisoners who decide to commit acts of self-harm up to the extreme is on the conscience of each of us of death".

Caforio recalls how "at the inauguration of the judicial year, the attorney general Sergio Sottani once again asked for the creation of Rems where to welcome prisoners with psychiatric disabilities now in ordinary prisons, often in maximum security ones".
