Two Egyptian "TikTokers", a man and a woman, were arrested and placed in custody in prison for shooting and posting a parody video of a prison visit on the Chinese platform.
The two young men, Basma Hegazi and Mohamed Hosam, have been
accused of spreading false news and of belonging to a terrorist organization,
reports the site (blacked out in Egypt) Middle East Monitor (Mee), reporting an accusation that generally indicates the membership of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, banned since 2013 in Egypt.
Several TikTok users have been arrested in Egypt
and charged with various crimes, including "insulting family values".
There was a wave of arrests of women abusing social media last year according to Egyptian authorities.
In a particularly prominent case, Haneen Hossam was sentenced in the first instance to ten years' imprisonment in June 2021 for "trafficking in human beings" and "debauchery": in Islamic Egypt she had published a video announcing to her 1.3 millions of 'followers' that girls could make money working with her on social media.
The sentence was later reduced to three years.
Mee associates the discount with the protests that the case had sparked online.
