We are already used to the nonsense of the Kardashian family, certainly when it comes to health, but they still manage to surprise.

In recent days, fans have spotted Kim Kardashian showing off her charcoal gray tea on Story, a seemingly common occurrence for the 42-year-old who has been talking about the health benefits of charcoal for years.

So what's the difference now?

This time Kim's story made nutritionists speak out against the coal trend and claim that the results could be harmful to health.

People who believe in the benefits of charcoal claim that it is able to absorb chemicals and toxins, thus reducing their absorption in the body, which leads to its use as a detox ingredient.

Usually, the charcoal comes in powder form and is added to hot drinks or smoothies as a strengthening ingredient.

Kim's tea isn't the only charcoal drink the Kardashians have tried, and sister Kourtney previously shared a "charcoal latte" recipe on her lifestyle site Poosh.

On the website, she writes that she has "been in love with charcoal for a long time" and believes that it can help with bloating and gas, as well as deep cleansing of toxins.

Healthy or dangerous?

"Activated charcoal actually acts as an absorbent sponge, absorbing various chemicals from the body and the skin," Hannah Macy, head nutritionist at Feel Complete, told Yahoo! "Overuse of drugs and poisoning. When the correct dose is given by a professional, it can bind to drugs and poisons, reducing the amount absorbed in the intestine."

However, she also cautioned that there is not enough research on the long-term effects of activated charcoal and while "small amounts should not cause harm or side effects, the long-term effects of high doses have not yet been studied."

Another concern with activated charcoal is that it can interfere with any medication being taken due to its sorption capabilities.
