The first projections of the
2022 Census
, which were released on May 19, had given a population of 47,327,407 inhabitants.
This Tuesday, in the presentation of the
preliminary results
, the INDEC
corrected that number
.
But it did it with an error: it showed a total number of population that was not the final one.
Marco Lavagna, head of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, began his presentation to the press by
highlighting the quality of the census data
, and remarked that the coverage rate of 98.6% is "very good, above the parameters international, which is 98%".
And he showed a slide in which it was seen that the coverage was similar throughout the country.
Then he went on to inform the most relevant data of the presentation:
the total population of the country
.
Then, the slide displayed on the screens in the agency room where the data was given showed the number 46,082,160.
But almost at the same time, the INDEC website uploaded the PDF with the official information: 46,044,703.
A difference of 37,457 people
.
At that time, the audio of the YouTube broadcast - which had many problems and constant cuts - was cut off, and the number could not be heard correctly.
But Lavagna had started reading the Power Point,
noticed the error and corrected it by reading the PDF
.
"The screen was lying", he was heard saying when that microcut in the sound was corrected.
"
It's a human error. It was mine.
We've been doing this non-stop for six days and I forgot to refresh the presentation,"
a member of Lavagna's team admitted to
Clarín .
"Marco had nothing to do with it," he added.
