Anti-Semitic and embarrassing: this film is simply an outrage Israel today

2023-01-31T10:35:07.945Z

The new comedy starring Jonah Hill and Ezra Miller echoes conspiracy theories irresponsibly, and touches on sensitive issues in a superficial and superficial way.

Successful television creator Kenya Barris ("Such Black") teams up with Jewish-American comedian Jonah Hill to present "Some People" - a star-studded romantic comedy about a Jewish guy named Ezra (Hill) and an African-American Muslim girl named Amira (Lauren London ), who try to overcome their parents' prejudices and realize their love.

• "Babylon" is a spectacular and delightful grandiose riot

• Get your tissues ready, this movie breaks your heart

• This movie is one of Netflix's biggest misses

Despite the good and conciliatory intentions that I assume the two had (who jointly signed the script), the result is awkward, not funny, tasteless, insensitive and contains several scenes that could easily be interpreted as anti-Semitic.

As expected and as usual in this type of films, the script is full of clichés and stereotypes in order to squeeze a few cheap laughs and bring the parties closer.

But the treatment of the sensitive, contemporary and explosive subject at the center of the film is simply superficial and outrageous, mainly because many of the stereotypes used by Aris and Hill, along with a number of conspiracy theories that echo irresponsibly (the most prominent of which is the one according to which the Jews were able to recover from the Holocaust quickly because they made commercial capital in slaves), are presented in a way that will allow viewers of a certain type to accept them as their being.

The vast majority of the Jews in the film are doctors, brokers, sex offenders or racists who stormed the capitol (or both), and all of them, as it is hinted several times, succeeded in life mainly due to their connections and family affiliation, and not due to their skills, God forbid.

Meanwhile, Ezra's parents, played by David Duchovny and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (in a particularly terrible and pitiful performance), are presented as rich, awkward, detached and tactless idiots who give the impression that they have never met a black person in their lives.

Of course, even among Amira's family there is no shortage of negative representations.

Her father, played by Eddie Murphy, is anti-vaccine and an ardent supporter of Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam (who is known for his anti-Semitic remarks), and her uncle is a criminal who tries to evade child support payments.

But there is not even a semblance of balance between the parties, and the general feeling that is given throughout the film is that Ezra is the one who has to bow down and beg to be accepted.

Murphy's character, for his part, will likely continue to admire Farrakhan.

Zero chemistry.

In any case, even if we ignore all these disturbing elements, "Some People" remains a very weak film.

Apart from the fact that they both really like designer sports shoes and expensive clothes, for a moment it is not clear what Ezra and Amira find in each other, and there is not even an iota of chemistry between the two.

On top of it all, the movie looks less like a movie and more like a collection of unfunny skits slapped together with a crude hand.

There is not a single moment in it that feels like it was taken from real life.

At least half an hour could have been cut from it, and its last part - which leads to the inevitable and clearly unconvincing happy ending - is completely ridiculous.

As a dessert, the closing credits are shown in the background of a song by Kanye West - probably the most famous Jew-hater in the world right now.
