The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) revealed the provisional results. The main data.

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) published this Tuesday the provisional results of the

2022 Census

, which took place on May 18.

According to the new revelations,

46,082,160 people live in Argentina.

Of these, 23,690,481 are women (51.76%), 22,072,046 are men (48.11%) and 8,293 (0.02%) did not identify with any of these genders.

In the housing category, a total of 17,805,711 were recorded: 17,780,210 individuals and 25,501 collectives.

The organization headed by Marco Lavagna had already advanced some initial results, 24 hours after the population survey was completed, eight and a half months ago.

On that occasion, INDEC estimated the population in Argentina at 47,327,407, which showed an increase of 18% with respect to the conclusions of the previous operation, which was carried out in 2010. A number that, moreover, was higher than that disclosed this Tuesday.

These data, they opportunely explained, were a kind of flimsy "exit outlet": they had a margin of error of close to a million people.

It was also detailed then that 25,003,069 women and 22,267,545 men live in the country, in addition to 56,793 people who do not identify with either of these two genders.

As INDEC clarified, these first results "should be interpreted as a trend of the field operation" and may differ from the final results.

"The digital census was one of the great novelties. It is transitional, it marks methodological changes for the future. At first we did not know how the population would receive it. It was a resounding success," said Lavagna on Tuesday, who was accompanied in the announcement by the technical director Pedro Lines and the national director of Social and Population Statistics, Gladys Massé.

"The 2022 Census covered 98.6% of segments at the national level. "This at the international level is an extremely good level," said the head of INDEC, who also highlighted the similar coverage in all regions of the country.

The initial schedule provided for the provisional results to be released on August 15.

However, the diffusion suffered delays.

As reported, as a result of a series of errors, a distortion of data would have been generated, for which it was explained -among opposition claims- that they would only be disseminated in the last quarter of 2022 and then the wait was extended until 2023.

The specific inconvenience was due to the poor preparation of manual forms, due to errors by some census takers (they marked the total number of cohabitants, male plus female, with an x) and due to an error by INDEC itself.

Despite the fact that the 2022 Census was bimodal (virtual and face-to-face), it was indicated that "everyone should stay at home" to receive the census taker and answer him - face to face - how many people lived in the home and what sex they were.

But some people left home and delegated the alphanumeric code to a neighbor or building manager.

Thus, some census takers did not obtain the data

in situ,

which introduced a "bump" in data processing.

In any case, the information was obtained through the virtual questionnaire.

On May 18, some problems had arisen with the population survey, since there were census takers who were unable to cover the area entrusted to them.

Lavagna attributed these problems to situations typical of any census, such as census takers who did not show up or who left their work halfway.

To cover these gaps, INDEC reopened the online form and also launched a "recovery operation" to conduct an on-site census of those households that did not want to complete the process via the Internet.
