Are the Swiss paying unfairly for overpriced French books?
The country's regulator has just opened an investigation against Madrigall, parent company of Gallimard, Flammarion and Casterman, suspected of distorting competition.
This procedure stems from a complaint filed last September by the CEO of Payot bookstores, Pascal Vandenberghe, who accuses the third largest publishing group in France
"of preventing Swiss booksellers from obtaining books in France at the price of French market and under the usual French conditions"
.
According to him, French-speaking bookstores would buy on average the works distributed by Madrigall at prices
“40% to 50% higher”
than those practiced on the tricolor market.
An additional cost that they would therefore pass on to their reader customers.
While large retailers such as Fnac Switzerland would benefit from the same prices applied in France.
