"The host of the show, Dr. Phil McGraw (72), has chosen to end his career in order to promote new ventures," said a statement to the media on behalf of the CBS network yesterday (Tuesday). The statement stated that the network will continue to broadcast episodes in the current broadcast season and that Gru is currently working on a strategic prime time partnership that should expand its audience base and will be unveiled in 2024.
McGraw renewed his contract with CBS Media Ventures in 2018 for a period of five years, and according to the agreement the network now has the right to air past episodes in the 23rd and 24th seasons of the show.
"I'm blessed with more than 25 successful years in television," McGraw said in a statement to the People website.
"As part of the program, we helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers deal with a variety of issues ranging from addictions and problems in marriage to mental problems and raising children. It was an amazing chapter in my life and career and despite my amazing path on television there are many more things I want to do," he concluded.
The successful talk show "Doctor Phil" began as a segment on Oprah Winfrey's show in the late nineties, and after gaining great popularity, received its own broadcast slot and became an independent program in 2002.
