Road safety: 3,260 road deaths in 2022, a stable figure compared to before Covid

While the number of victims on the roads has increased compared to 2021, this figure remains similar to that of 2019, the last reference year.


The figure is up compared to 2021, but remains stable compared to the figures for 2019 (+0.5%), before the pandemic.

According to data published this Wednesday by Road Safety, 3,260 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2022, compared to 2,947 people in 2021.

Travel during the year 2021 having still been very disrupted by the management of the pandemic, “the assessment of road accidents in 2022 is compared to the year 2019”, explains the organization.

According to reports made by law enforcement services to Road Safety, 236,000 people were injured (-1.3%) in 2022 on the roads of mainland France, including 16,000 seriously (-1.9 %).

A 30% increase in cyclists killed

Last year was marked in particular by a “worrying increase” in the mortality of cyclists with 244 killed, a figure up 30% compared to 2019 (+ 57 killed).

“Less than 50% of road deaths are car occupants,” said the Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, Florence Guillaume.

If we look in detail at the other types of accidents, Road Safety indicates that "484 pedestrians, 34 users of personal transport vehicles

(such as electric scooters)

, 715 users of motorized two-wheelers, 1,563 occupants of cars.

58 children aged 13 or under have died” in a road accident.

Among them, 98 teenagers aged 14 to 17, 552 young people between 18 and 24 and 875 seniors aged 65 or over.

The proportion of men among the victims of fatal accidents is also increasing slightly, since they represented 78% of victims in 2022, compared to 77.9% in 2021 and 76.7% in 2018.

This detailed assessment only concerns mainland France.

In the overseas departments and communities as well as in New Caledonia, according to data available to Road Safety, 281 people were killed.

A balance sheet up 11% compared to 2019 (+27 killed).
