The signing of Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez from Benfica causes the Premier League to break spending records, outclassing all other major leagues.

The Fernandez deal brings the total amount invested by the clubs in the English top flight to 815 million pounds (922 million euros), of which 275 million only on the last day of the transfer market which ended last night at 24, and that overall for the 2022 season /23 to 2.8 billion pounds (3.17 billion euros).

According to figures released by the BBC on sources from Deloitte, the sum invested just yesterday is 83% higher than the previous record of the winter transfer market, which was 150 million pounds, set in 2018, while the total in January almost doubles that of winter 2018 (£430 million).

Furthermore, spending by English top-flight clubs accounted for 79% of the total for the big five European leagues.

Chelsea alone spent more in January - around £288m - than the combined total of all clubs in the Bundesliga, LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1 in France.
