I married my cousin - accidentally (@beingmarcellahill)

Marcela Hill is an author and TikTok star with almost 300,000 followers who watch her health recommendations on the social network.

But a video she uploaded recently became very viral for completely different reasons.

"So, I've never said it publicly but... I accidentally married my cousin," Marcela revealed, shocking her followers.

Hill explained that when she was pregnant she and her husband Teige were looking for a name for the baby.

"I told my husband - let's check our family tree and maybe name him after some grandmother or grandfather, or maybe a great-grandmother or great-grandfather."

While Hill was checking her genealogy and family tree, her husband was next to her doing the same thing and suddenly he hissed at her "Hey, that's funny. Our grandparents have the same names."

@beingmarcellahill Funny story... I accidentally married my cousin.

We had no idea our Grandma and Grandpa were 1st cousins.

The couple then went on to compare their family trees and realized that her grandfather and Teige's grandmother were uncles.

"He called his grandmother and I called my grandfather and we asked them if they knew each other."

The answer was positive.

They have a common great-grandfather and great-grandmother, which means that Hill and her husband are related - third cousins, yes, but it was still a discovery that changed their lives.

But over time the couple came to terms with this information and they are still happily married for 12 years with four children.

Hill even claims there are some benefits to it.

How did they not know about it?

In another video she uploaded, she said that she and her husband got married after a day's work in a small ceremony at a local courthouse in Utah and they had never been to a big family event and therefore did not surpass their family connection.

As soon as they discovered the family relationship, they immediately searched on Google whether there are any risks of having a child with a third cousin.

"We suddenly felt as if we were doing something really unacceptable without knowing it."

Google reassured us when we read: "A study found that marrying third or fourth cousins is optimal for reproduction because they have the 'best of both worlds,'" she said, citing a study published on the scientific website Live Science.

But some followers didn't think it was a "big deal" and one even reassured her by saying "we're all cousins, if we look far enough".

She herself wondered: "Let's say we had a big wedding and my grandfather and his grandmother were there, and we found out we were third cousins at the wedding - what were we supposed to do?"
