Enzo Carra , former
DC
spokesman
when Arnaldo Forlani was secretary ,
died in Rome overnight .
He was 79 years old.
During the Tangentopoil
investigation
he was arrested and caused a stir, as well as causing strong controversy,
the photo of his arrest in court
: Carra appeared handcuffed with the so-called
"schiavettoni"
, a type of handcuffs with a heavy chain used to prevent escape of the inmates.
A participatory debate arose on the use of this measure, considered by many to be excessive and humiliating.
However, his name is mainly linked to the political activity carried out with the
Christian Democrats
and, in the following years, with the UDC and Margherita.
"A big hug to the family and to those who mourn the death of Enzo Carra today on behalf of the whole community of democrats".
The secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta
, writes it on social media
"A good, cultured, intelligent man. A piece of history of the Christian Democrats and a witness of what politics should be. For me and for many of us, a true friend who will be missed".
Pd senator Dario Franceschini
writes in a note of condolence
.
"Today an authentic gentleman leaves us. Enzo was so in his private and political life. A reserved person, not a fan of clamor, he endured the media pillory resulting from the executioner's fury with profound suffering. And he lived it with profound dignity and with respect for the institutions".
This was stated
by Lorenzo Cesa
of the UDC.
"We were proud to have had him among our parliamentarians in which he distinguished himself for his ability to be a point of reference, even for young parliamentarians, for his human qualities and his ability to synthesise. A name of the UDC community, I express my deepest condolences to his family. Hi Enzo!", he concludes.
"My condolences to the family and friends of Enzo Carra, a valuable personality of the experience represented by Margherita. His experience and his predisposition to confrontation and discussion will be missed by the political community".
This was stated by
Matteo Richetti
, group leader of Azione-Italia Viva in the Chamber of Deputies.
"Enzo Carra has left us. Journalist, intellectual, politician, but above all a great political commentator, capable of interpreting the political framework with acumen and foresight and of knowing how to grasp the essence of public debate like few others. A gentleman and a friend have left us , with whom we discussed and gathered until the last few hours for the publication of his latest book, 'The Last Republic' (Eurilink University Press), due out today. His disappearance causes a great void in the journalistic and political panorama of our Country. In this moment of immense pain we are close to his wife Olga and son Giorgio".
The former deputy
Michele Anzaldi
and the former minister
Enzo Scotti
declare it in a note .
"I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family of the Honorable Enzo Carra. He was a victim of the executioner's fury of Tangentopoli, true, but above all a journalist and politician of remarkable intelligence. A great loss".
So in a note
Raffaella Paita
, president of the Action-Italia Viva group in the Senate.
"Enzo Carra was an excellent journalist and a respectable politician, whose public image was indelibly tarnished by the media pillory to which he was subjected, in handcuffs, at the time of the executioner's fury of Mani Pulite. He did not let himself be discouraged. He maintained his good humor and curiosity then, just as he maintained them in the last months of living with the disease. He was a personal friend and a friend of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation. Our most heartfelt condolences to his family," said
Andrea Cangini
, general secretary of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation.
"Enzo Carra, intellectual and political end, former DC spokesman, has left us. A man capable of interpreting the political framework with acumen and foresight and of knowing how to grasp the essence of public debate like few others. A serious loss not only for the family , to whom my deepest condolences go, but for all of us who knew him, who worked with him, who appreciated and esteemed him".
