The January gas bill for families who get supplies on the protected market is down sharply.

Based on the average performance of the Italian wholesale market in January 2023 and for consumption in the same month, for the standard household (with average consumption of 1,400 cubic meters per year) under protection, there is

a decrease of 34.2% compared to December 2022.

The Arera communicates it, explaining that for January, which recorded a much lower average wholesale price than that of December, the price of the gas raw material for protected customers is equal to 68.37 euros per MWh.

In December 2022 the bill had increased by 23.2% compared to November.

"The reduction for the month of January, in terms of final effects, still does not fully compensate for the high price levels reached in the last year, with gas expenditure for the typical family (with average consumption of 1,400 cubic meters per year ) in the rolling year (February 2022-January 2023) which is approximately 1,769 euros, +36% compared to the equivalent 12 months of the previous year (February 2021-January 2022)".

This was communicated by Arera recalling that, as required by the budget law,

In January 2023, the 34.2% reduction in the price of natural gas for the typical household compared to the previous month,

"already applying the VAT reduction envisaged by government measures, is determined by the reduction in expenditure on natural gas (- 35.9%), due to the drop in the Cmem component relating to natural gas procurement costs, the slight increase linked to expenses for transport and meter management (+0.3%) and the new level of coverage of charges system envisaged by the 'Budget Law' (+1.4%) already approved at the end of December with the persistence of a reduction effect for the end user", specifies Arera in a technical sheet.

The subdivision of the expenditure for the supply of natural gas of the typical domestic user served under protection is 83.84% for "gas", 22.19% for taxes and 25.40% for transport and meter management.

The reference price of gas for the average customer is 99.37 euro cents per cubic metre, taxes included.

The regulatory authority for energy, networks and the environment specifies that the cost of natural gas is divided into 77.72 euro cents (equal to 78.20% of the total bill) for the supply of natural gas and for related activities, with a reduction of approximately 39.90% compared to the month of December 2022 and 5.60 euro cents (5.64% of the total bill) for retail sales, equal to the value for the month of December 2022 .

The expense for the transport and management of the meter includes 25.24 euro cents (25.40% of the total bill) for distribution, metering, transport, distribution equalization and quality services, with an increase of 1.63 % compared to the month of December 2022. Expenditure for general system charges is -31.24 euro cents (-31.43% of the total bill), "with a continuing reduction effect for the end user ".

As for taxes: 22.05 euro cents (22.19% of the total bill) for taxes which include excise duties (15.38%), the regional surcharge (2.04%) and VAT (4 .76%).
