Sudan and Israel "agreed to proceed towards the normalization of relations", during the first official visit of an Israeli diplomat to Khartoum.
This was announced by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry.
The "foundations have been laid for a historic peace agreement with a strategic Arab and Muslim country".
This was stated by Minister Eli Cohen on his return from "a historic state visit" to Sudan during which - with "the consent of the USA" - the parties finalized a text of agreement for the start of diplomatic relations whose official signature (in Washington) will be implemented "later this year" and once powers are transferred from the current military government in Khartoum to a civilian executive.
The United States "supports Israel's actions aimed at greater integration in the region".
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said this in a press briefing expressing appreciation for the agreement reached today in Khartoum between Sudan and Israel for a normalization of relations.
