"The good of information enjoys explicit constitutional protection. Article 21 of the Charter, in stating that "Everyone has the right to freely express their thoughts by word, writing and any other means of diffusion - this concerns every citizen - underlines the value of the press as a medium, indicating that "it cannot be subjected to authorization or censorship".

President Sergio Mattarella underlines this in a message on the occasion of the

60th anniversary of the Order of Journalists.

"Information - continues President Mattarella in the message - is a vehicle of freedom and it is no coincidence that the Constituent Assembly itself wanted to approve a law on provisions on the press, which traced, after twenty years of gag, a path return to independence for the media. The role played by journalistic work in enlivening the constitutional norms then found protection, with the implicit definition of intellectual profession and the recognition of the essential function performed by independent journalism in making the exercise of the rules effective of democracy, in the Gonella law, which in 1963 regulated the organization of the profession".

Journalists have a "huge responsibility"

.

"A responsibility accentuated by the multiplication of sources of information offered by the revolution of the web. Above all, the journalistic profession is entrusted with the role of expressing free criticism according to the duties of loyalty and good faith. Journalists, in this context, are given the relevant task, for the purposes of the free formation of citizens' opinions, respect for the substantial truth of the facts".

This was written by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Order of Journalists.

"Here is the value - underlines the president Mattarella in the message - of the definition of the professional autonomy of every journalist and of the self-government of the category which is entrusted, as for any other professional order, with the essential and precious function of defending deontology. challenges that the world of information is called to meet, starting from the applications of artificial intelligence, cannot disregard respect for the fundamental canons outlined for the profession by the Gonella law".
