In southern Germany, heavy snowfalls have led to traffic delays, and in eastern Bavaria schools have also been canceled in many places.

Because of the snowfall in the night, dozens of accidents had already occurred in parts of southern and eastern Bavaria during the night.

There were a few accidents, especially in eastern Bavaria, but they were largely minor, the police headquarters in Upper Palatinate reported.

Here alone there were almost 600 weather-related operations in the morning.

Officials reported 109 accidents involving property damage.

In 14 cases, people were slightly injured.

Several roads had to be completely or partially closed, including the federal highway 85 near Auerbach and parts of the B16 between the towns of Hauzendorf and Nittenau.

gusts of wind in the north

The Ministry of Education canceled school classes in the Lower Bavarian districts of Freyung-Grafenau and Regen and in the district of Cham (Upper Palatinate) on Thursday evening due to the heavy snowfall.

In the districts of Straubing-Bogen and Deggendorf, there are no classes in the communities north of the Danube or in Deggendorf itself.

In eastern Bavaria, the railway lines between Lam and Cham and between Cham and Waldmünchen were also closed.

In the Rhön, wintry weather and broken snow had already caused problems on Thursday.

Cars and trucks stopped and roads were closed, the police said.

The ski area on the Wasserkuppe was also temporarily closed.

Because trees had fallen and fallen onto lifts and slopes, the lifts on Hesse's highest mountain had been standing still since Tuesday evening.

30 centimeters of fresh snow then exacerbated the situation on Thursday.

The German Weather Service (DWD) predicted further snowfall for the higher areas of the Bavarian Forest.

According to the forecast, strong gusts of wind can lead to drifts.

In northern Germany, on the other hand, according to the forecast, the fronts of a storm from Poland will bring changeable weather.

The DWD expects widespread gusts of wind and gusts of wind between 65 and 80 kilometers per hour for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein until late in the evening.

The wind is expected to ease over the course of the evening.

At the weekend there can be frost in some areas with lows of minus two degrees.

Occasionally slippery terrain is possible due to freezing wet conditions.
