(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 04 - A university professor who openly criticizes the Taliban ban on women's education has been arrested in Kabul.

The teacher, Ismail Mashal, 37, was stopped while distributing free books and accused of "provocative actions" by the Taliban.

Witnesses said the professor was slapped, punched and kicked by Taliban security forces during his arrest.

Mashal rose to prominence after tearing up academic records on live TV to protest the Taliban ban on university and secondary education for women.

Hammad wrote on Twitter that the professor is accused of trying to harm the government by inviting journalists to crowd on a main road and create "chaos".

Soon after the announcement last December that girls would be excluded from schools and universities, the 37-year-old Mashal made the drastic decision to close his Mashal University, open to both men and women, who ran a small private university in Kabul. she taught courses for 250 Afghan women in journalism, engineering, business and computer science: "Either it's open to everyone, or it's not open to anyone," she said.
