(ANSA) - NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 04 - The Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the Atlantic "successfully" in an operation conducted in coordination with the Canadian government.
This was stated by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, underlining that he ordered the operation on Wednesday, but that he waited until a safe place was reached.
After the president announced that he would 'take care' of it, the balloon was destroyed over the Atlantic Ocean by order of Biden himself who followed the operation from Air Force One, with which he was on his way to Camp David.
The spy balloon was used by China in an attempt to monitor strategic sites in the United States, Defense Minister Lloyd Austin said, confirming that he was shot down.
Operations were then launched to recover the remains.
Immediately before the Federal Administration Aviation, the US aviation authority, had announced the closure of three airports and part of the airspace of North and South Carolina for "national security initiatives".
