VENICE - The Carnival of Venice has entered the heart of the event.
Among hundreds of colored balloons today, the Venice Carnival 2023 "Take Your Time For The Original Signs" officially kicked off from the Grand Canal.
After last night's parade today about a hundred traditional Venetian boats, decorated and coloured, plowed the waters of the most famous waterway in the world carrying the legendary papier-mâché "Pantegana", which opened in front of the Rialto Bridge under the eyes of thousands of spectators.
"A wonderful parade on the typical boats of Venice with a population of over 100 boats with more than 800 rowers in costume on board. Traditions and colors mixed to create a wonderful event" said the artistic director Massimo Checchetto.
Typical Venetian songs accompanied the slow path of the procession, created in collaboration with the Coordination of the Rowing Associations of Venetian Voga, led by the Pantegana, 7 meters long and symbol of the popular Venetian Carnival.
The party then continued in Erbaria, where the 4 most unique and best decorated boats were awarded: a group of Murano whose crew was dressed as Teletubbies (the children's television series created by the BBC), a group of women only dressed as Pierrot on board from Lake Garda,
a boat from Arzanà with the crew dressed up as a deck of cards and a traditional prize for a gondola with the felze.
"The 2023 Venice Carnival has finally started with what, we like to say, is a purely Venetian parenthesis and with the Pantegana, the true queen of the Venetian Carnival - added Giovanni Giusto, managing director for the Protection of Traditions - we have landed in Rialto, where everything was born more than 1600 years ago and where the history of the Serenissima began".
The event took place in total safety, articulated along the Grand Canal and allowing for a homogeneous distribution of the public, avoiding closures and barriers.
The shows in the squares, squares and streets of Venice and Mestre also continued throughout the day.
