Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner is the new Oldenburg kale king.
The FDP politician replaces Berlin's governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) - the longest-serving regent ever.
The change took place on Monday evening at the traditional "Defbig Ollnborger Gröönkohl-Äten" in the representation of the state of Lower Saxony in Berlin.
The so-called Kurfürsten-College had elected Giffey cabbage queen in March 2020.
At that time she was still Federal Minister for Family Affairs.
After the traditional event had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic in 2021 and 2022, she remained in office.
Traditionally, the scepter is actually passed on after just one year – with all its duties: the new regent must therefore pay at least one visit to the Oldenburg »Kohlvolk«.
Eating kale since 1956
Before the selection of the new cabbage king, Oldenburg's mayor Jürgen Krogmann (SPD) served the 270 guests hearty food: around 200 kilograms of organic kale and around 240 kilograms of pinkel, Kassler, boiled sausage and bacon.
The not very light meal was washed down with bitter beer.
Schnapps should help with digestion.
The 64th Grünkohlessen was organized by the city of Oldenburg.
She has been using the evening since 1956 to cultivate contacts in Berlin.
Even when Bonn was still the capital, Essen established itself as a meeting place for political celebrities.
Before the corona pandemic, it had only failed because of the flood disaster in 1962 and during the Gulf War in 1991.
